What do we know about DarkSide?
The FBI says this group of potentially Russian hackers were behind an attack that shut down a major pipeline on Friday.
The Colonial Pipeline supplies the East Coast with half of its gasoline and jet fuel. The company says it should be back up and running by the end of the week.
But the fact that a ransomware attack could bring down such a huge piece of infrastructure has set off alarm bells on Capitol Hill.
We now know who was behind the ransomware attack, but the why is a lot less clear. We ask one cybersecurity expert his take.

It's not entirely laziness and it does not equate to just Americans with regards to cybersecurity. So let's just stop the self loathing rhetoric. Cybersecurity is not easy nor is it properly resourced. However, it is getting better as more of these attacks happen and demonstrate to government and corporate leaders that it must be dealt with. If we want to make things better, it comes with people. We need to encourage more people to become cybersecurity aware and to choose cyber tracks in education. Right now, there are far too many positions for cyber experts than there are actual qualified cybersecurity experts. I'm reviewing people for positions right now and half of them seem to have woken up one day and decided "I think I'll become a cybersecurity expert today," and then they apply for jobs they can't possibly handle without a significant amount of training.

In some ways this is a good thing. Isolated attacks in a good economic environment allows us to see problems and shore up our security, to take it more seriously. Much better than concentrated attacks when we are dealing with something like a major war.

Ah the Russians still using the mafia and other groups to do their dirty work giving full plausible deniability all while getting the dirty work done and probably taking a big cut of any ransom or data mined.

That is my impression. The Russian Mafia is also entangled into our political system. As for the fuel line hack in 2016 some idiot rammed a pipeline in Alabama or Mississippi, stopping the flow of fuel to much of southern Appalachia for a week. Was anything done to prevent this disruption again, hack or another fool ramming the pipeline? Seems not. I like the way you use plausible deniability because this seems how they work.
