I am at Fort Gordon as a civilian and work with mostly Soldiers. Has there been a change in policy where Soldiers can walk around with their hands in their pockets? I see it everywhere, outside walking on the sidewalk, in PTs, in duty uniform. Just this morning, one of our 1LTs walking outside with both hands in his pockets. Drives me crazy, it's so unprofessional.

Thank God we serve in a military that is so perfect that one of the most pressing concerns is whether or not some Joe has his hand in his pocket. the bigger question is: while his hands are in his pockets, is he wearing his reflective belt?

HAHA! I find it interesting what we view as "unprofessional". You can be the greatest under-performer in the Army but if you are good at pushups and situps then you are a "stud". The term "professional" in the Army is both misunderstood and overused.

Devils advocate : The regulations provide no time limit for how long one can spend looking for keys or other objects in your pockets.

LTC (Join to see) - talking about pocket knives and the like, all those Gerbers and Leathermans we have attached to our belts, yep, against regulation, the only thing allowed to be attached to the belt are a set of keys, specifically the armorers keys.

SSG Robert Perrotto - as with many regulations pertaining to "professional appearance" it is entirely subjective. I remember once as a young SGT I got chewed by a SGM for having my hands in my pockets. it was about halfway through a 2 week FTX, hadn't had a shower in 3-4 days, covered in dirt/grime from crawling on, around and under PATRIOT launchers in the mud. But it was my hands in my pockets that made me look "unprofessional".

LTC (Join to see) - we have all been there at some point sir, Got an ass chewing for removing my battlerattle when we crawled through the bush at benning, I then removed my blouse and the SGM saw the fireants. I still bear the scars from those sonsofbitches

I was wondering if someone else thought of this. I find myself rushing to retrieve contents from any pocket because I don't want it to be assumed I am comforting my hands. Lol
