I'm in the National Guard and my contract is up in 3 months. I am currently flagged for failing the PT test and I plan on getting out on my ETS date. What type of discharge will I most likely receive? Is my unit able to give me an other than honorable discharge for that?

Could be Honorable, could be General under Honorable, could be Other Than Honorable. You Commander will make their recommendation as to what type you should receive. The one you end up with is up in the air, really.

yep. it just depends on the command. If this is his first PT failure and he has otherwise been a good soldier they will most likely give him an honorable discharge. However, and not to be too much of an ass, TIG for SPC is 4 months, TIS is 24 months. The fact that he is ETSing from the guard as a PFC is an indicator that he's had some prior issues. So this PT failure may the last straw and the difference between an honorable and general.

LTC (Join to see) - Also, this is the Guard, so it could also be the one lingering issue: APFT fail and flag at some point as PFC, still flagged at and past 24 months TIS.

SGM (Join to see) - exactly. I've been in the guard/reserves for 22 years and I've never seen anyone ETS as a PFC unless they had been in some kind of trouble on a semi-regular basis. Seen plenty get chaptered for a wide variety of reasons as a PFC but have never seen a single one complete their contract and ETS as a PFC unless they were a substandard soldier.

Part of serving honorably is passing your PT standards, why would you expect Honorable? I certainly don't think it should be Other than Honorable, but I would think General would be appropriate... just my opinion though..

Why not just take and pass it so you have no flags and get out knowing you meet the bare min standards?

SGT Donald Croswhite on a side not, I believe you are correct about the regs I just don't agree with them. I also think this conversation has driven us both to drop our personal standards. I should not have called you an ass, have a good day and thanks for the debate!

CDR Terry Boles - I hit my high 3 for retirement in SEP 2022. With the COVID crap going on APFT scores are valid until further notice and I saw where they aren't going to start counting ACFT scores until MAR 2022. I'm dropping my retirement packet as soon as I can to retire 1 OCT 2022. 36 years never failed an APFT but I'm hoping to never take one again.

LTC Bruce Burch retirement is just around the corner for you. Like yourself, I served 37-years and never failed or didn't take a PT test but they sure were more difficult as time went by; and i can say unequivocally I do not miss them. Fitness these days is all about me, not some timed or numbered event.

I think the looooongest time of any of my duty stations, deployments, etc. was the time between when I dropped my retirement package and when terminal leave began....seemed like FOREVER! However, with all that said do cherish your numbered AD days left.

Best of luck with all your future endeavors.

Thomas the unit can give you any discharge but a Dishonorable Discharge. Because you have proven to not be prepared to be a soldier and live up to your contract. In Fact if you fail 1 more AFPT they can discharge you before your ETS.
