-First five minutes after being posted, as 2ndLt Porter begins reading page 2 of the duty binder. -
**ring ring**
"Third Battalion, Tenth Marines officer of the day, Second Lieutenant Porter speaking, how may I help you, Sir or Ma'am?"
"Ah yes, this is Sgt whateveritwas at PMO, we have a Lance Corporal "Ferrell" (name mistake was the military police's and conceals true identity at once) here from your battalion, he was involved in a domestic violence complaint"......
And thus began 5 1/2 hours of crash course instruction for 2ndLt Porter in managing personnel misbehavior on behalf of the Battalion.
**ring ring**

Always read the duties and responsibilities SOP. Know where everything is and who to contact; ie, Red Cross Messages. Be thorough as possible.

1. make sure you understand your duties. If you are the Duty Officer, you are also familiar with the instructions assigned to the duty NCO and runner.2. Do not try and cut corners in carrying out your duties. 3. Make sure your duty log is complete and detailed in case any questions arise later.

and for those who never think anything exciting happens, I have had staff duty new years eve and had the guards shoot their ammo off to celebrate the new year coming in. I walked through the motor pool at 2am(pitch black-new light poles had not been installed yet) and a m151 jeep started up and 2 people drove out the motor pool with it.
