If I needed money for a trip or something else I had to work and earn it. Cutting my grandmothers yard, aunts yard, running grocery errands, cleaning gutters etc...whatever it took.

We developed a work ethic brother. I mentioned work ethic to some folks at work, you would have thought I said we all had the plague or the Wi-Fi was down. Lt Col Scott Shuttleworth PO1 John Johnson

I had a lot of side jobs, plus I worked part time in my uncle's machine shop, started a dollar an hour, big money to a twelve year old in '69.

Same with me, mowing lawns in summer, shoveling driveways in winter.

That's the way it worked at my house, PO1 John Johnson! I was cutting neighbors' lawns at age 12! My grandmother always said, "Thank God for work and the strength to do it."
