My wife works for an environmental firm. Here is what I've learned

-On every side of any controversial issue, advocates follow information that confirms their bias.
-On every side of any controversial issue, advocates ridicule information that refutes their bias.
-Always follow the money, if you want to get to the heart of the issue.
-Until you know how their bias puts money in their pocket, assume people mean well, but challenge them.
-Once you know how their bias puts money in their pocket, assume they are lying, and challenge them.
-The more emotional someone gets, the more suspect they should be.

To your point on the "information" from those with an agenda:

Figures often beguile me, particularly when I have the arranging of them myself; in which case the remark attributed to Disraeli would often apply with justice and force: "There are three kinds of lies: lies, damned lies and statistics."

Yes it does make me think. It makes me think that the USMA should screen its applicants better.

CWO3 (Join to see) - I'm guessing that both you and MSgt Kurt S. may be old enough to remember the "global cooling" in the 70s. The ozone layer issues and removal of chlorofluorocarbons from aerosol cans. It was the "progressive agenda Dujour". Fast forward to the "politically correct" era in our colleges and the military. Service members are subjected to hours and hours of SHARP, EO, and other "training" sessions. The military has, since the 50s, been used as a social experiment. In our colleges and universities, first year students have to sit through classes on accepting fellow students who identify at LGBTQ and one of the 50 different non-binary genders that are out there. Our whole system of "higher learning" has become the indoctrination centers for the progressive agenda. This isn't me with a paranoid complex. The previous administration followed right out of the play book "Rules for Radicals".

I'd like to know if the cadets were made to watch the movie. Unfortunately the cadet seems to not want to engage in any kind of discourse. So, he leaves me to ass-u-me that the progressive agenda has either infected the service academies or he's a subscriber to that agenda. An agenda that would undermine the very Constitution we all swore to defend.

I apologize for the late response, I am just now reading your responses. I am actually currently working at an AIAD (West Point term for internship) with RallyPoint. As part of the AIAD we are encouraged to use the site and post daily with the goal of high response. I saw the commercial during the previews of the new Transformers movie the other day. I don't know a whole lot about the topic of climate change or "global warming." While I sat thinking of what I could post to get a high response rate for the day the commercial came to mind. In regards to my comments of "makes you think," they were completely arbitrary. I posted this video in order to get a high response rate and to hear the different sides of this topic. I was honestly surprised and glad about the high number of responses. I currently do not have a stance on this issue one way or another. As I stated in another comment the topic intrigued me and I will look more into it so that I may not be ignorant in the future should the subject arise. SGM Lynette Streitfield, CWO3 (Join to see), MSgt Kurt S. I appreciate your responses and stimulating conversation.

Cadet SGT (Join to see) - thank you for responding. I'm a firm believer that there is no such thing as a stupid question unless the one who poses the question argues the response(s) they get without considering the facts behind the answer, experience and knowledge of the person or persons who provide an answer. That being said, the video you posted with the rather vague statement attached begs the question, "Is the progressive agenda being pushed at the service academies?"

Cadet SGT (Join to see) - Thanks for your comment. I interpreted your post as you describe - a controversial topic with a non-endorsement - to encourage responses. I look forward to your posts and those of others. You will get varying responses depending on the topic and any endorsement you may include. Advise you remain neutral in order to avoid any confrontation(s) but that is your call. If you want to avoid controversy, politics and religion are a minefield on RP and in life. As a Cadet you represent the military and are expected to set the example, so be ever mindful of that. You'll figure it out in time. Good luck with your studies and military service.

At least you're showing interest in the issue, which is a lot more than most do. Whatever the effects of any carbon emissions may be, the catastrophic ones will likely not happen while we are living. The ice caps are melting but it could be part of a cycle of millions of years. I think most scientists agree that greenhouse gases aren't helping, some say they are harming, but none can really say to what degree. We are experiencing higher temps and more severe storms than when I grew up here 50 plus years ago, but I don't know the cause. I just know the effect and I don't need any data to prove it. I can just walk out the door and feel it. Being able to wear short sleeves on Christmas Day is all the proof I need. So at my level I just try to be responsible and accept it for what it is. Read the Serenity Prayer and you'll understand that not everything is in our control and we have to accept that and realize what things we can never change. My carbon footprint is not even a factor in the big picture, and although every little bit helps it takes a total Global commitment to make any difference. It makes no sense economically to starve ourselves out employment-wise and otherwise, if other Nations continue to pollute. So that's the problem, if you actually believe any of the claims. The doomsday types claim we are already past the point of reversing the effects, so it's now just a matter of keeping it from getting any worse. That is, if you actually believe them at all. Folks in coastal areas may be experiencing flooding but since I'm over 400 feet above sea level that's for them to worry about. People have relocated throughout history for a variety of reasons, so that is a choice for them to make. I didn't cause it so it doesn't keep me awake at night. Beware of false prophets with agendas, but don't be totally apathetic. Good luck with your career and thanks for sharing.
