I was asked an interesting question today by a female considering the Navy. Excluding telling her to join Rallypoint and talk with others, how would you respond ?

Edit:
She's going to school to be a social worker and currently thinks the Navy is the best choice for her - 23May2016, 1930EST.

My answer...Which ever branch provides you the best opportunities to do what you want/love and exceed in the best way possible. Same thing I would tell a male.

Same answer I would give to a Male. What are your Priorities, Interests, If Physical Fitness is your thing, I recommend the Marines, If Quality of Life is Important to you, I recommend the Air Force and if Travel, Travel and More Travel is what you want. Join the Navy.

As others have said the gender of the recruit isn't really relevant, especially now that all roles/jobs are open to both genders.

Why is the woman in question considering the Navy? Does she like the ocean? Does she like ships? Does she want to travel? Is there a particular rating/job the Navy has that she wants to do?

One other thing I'd like to add is not to forget about the Coast Guard, I know it's fun to rib (or was that rhib) the coasties but they work hard and put themselves in harms way just like the military does.

Great questions that I should've answered in the beginning. She thinks the Navy is better for women and she's going to school to be a social worker.

SGT (Join to see) - OK well I don't know of any Navy jobs that are directly or indirectly related to social work. For that matter social work is a pretty big field.

The Navy is probably the best service for seeing different cultures and places especially if going for a shipboard rate. Really any of the services will give a person life experiences that will benefit them in civilian life.

I won't pretend that females don't face unique challenges in the Navy (or any other service) there are biases to overcome, according to my son (stationed on a carrier) there are female sailors who are very well respected and others that are seen as dead weight. I'd imagine that individual commands and their own unique cultures plays a factor as well.
