Farmers Are Warming Up To The Fight Against Climate Change

Just over a decade ago, the American Farm Bureau Federation declared war on legislation to slow down global warming. The organization, a lobbying powerhouse, argued that a "cap-and-trade" proposal making its way through Congress would make fuel and fertilizer more expensive and put farmers out of business.
Farmers swarmed Capitol Hill wearing caps with the words "Don't Cap Our Future." And it worked. The legislation died, derailing the boldest plan Congress had crafted to cut greenhouse gas emissions.
Now, the Farm Bureau might be changing course. This week, it announced that it had formed a coalition that plans to push the government to adopt dozens of policy changes that would make it easier for farmers to reduce emissions from agriculture.
"We're going to have a real common sense, science-based discussion about how we protect the climate, and our farmers want to be part of that," said Zippy Duvall, president of the Farm Bureau.

Our family farm of 39 acres has been a blessing all around. We are pretty small, and the only thing that limits our abilities is time and finances. Our biggest income source for the farm is our hogs. Over the last three weeks, we've sold 8 market hogs and 9 piglets. Some of those piglets will end up in someone's freezer, while at least 5 of them will be used as breeders. I call that the "happy life" for pigs. Our primary goal with the farm is to become more self-reliant. If you want to check out what we are doing, look up "Anchored Farms" on FB, IG, or Blogspot. Besides my full time job as a QA in the Aerospace Industry, this farm takes up most of our family's spare time.

Good for you! My dad's side of the family were farmers, mostly run out of business now by the corporate farms. We grew up having home-cured Hampshire bacon and hams, which was much better than you could buy in a store. I'm not familiar with Red Wattles, other than they are bigger than the Hampshires my kin raised.

PO1 William "Chip" Nagel - Thank you. The farm is, according to our tax accountant, a "hobby" farm. Someday, I would like to retire from outside employment, and focus completely on the farm. , and primarily what that does is free up more time for my son-in-law.

Capt Gregory Prickett - I raised Chester White (now known as Large Whites) when I was a teen in high school. There is just something about the flavor of Red Wattle pork, that I really have no desire to raise anything else, right now. Red Wattles are a heritage breed, and their meat is more like red meat, like beef. I'm sure there are other breeds that are just as good, but Red Wattles are what we have, and they are difficult to find within a few hours of our home, which is why we started our RW breeding operations. We actually just had a family come from the Ft. Worth, TX area and buy two gilts from us, because they can't find Red Wattles close to their home. We live in Missouri. When I advertised our first litter for sale 18 months back, we had a couple tell us that they were just about to make a trip to Montana, from Missouri, to get Red Wattles, they were so excited when they found out there was a "breeder" close to them. As for commercial breeders, we live in a rural area, and the more people that buy our hogs, the more repeat buyers we have. My primary concern for the future is the price of feed.

CPO David R. D. - Most store-bought pork and ham products has little taste compared to farm raised and cured meat. I'll have to find some RW and give it a try. I also remember that I learned at a young age not to screw with the sows, they could get mean and moved faster than one would think that they could...lol.
