I have been a USAA member for a long time (over 22 years), with a credit card for that entire time. My wife joined our account over 15 years ago, but this month we had our number stolen for the first time ever while out to eat at a local restaurant.

To All: Watch your card, your number, and anything else that could be used to charge you money.

(USAA has been fantastic, both with notifying us, crediting the fraudlent charges, and starting the investigation, which I am doing as well with the restaurant in question.)

That's happened to me twice, LTC (Join to see). Both times I was using my USAA debit card, which was compromised, and it was the same debit card I used to pay a lot of recurring bills.

From that experience I learned another lesson: Experts say you should use your debit card very sparingly. Stick to credit cards. That way the thieves are using (tying up) the bank's money, not yours.

The last time this happened to me, the thieves charged over $3,000 to my card before I was able to alert USAA and have them turn off the card. I eventually got alll the money back, but that was the last time I used my debit card, except where absolutely necessary. I now use a credit card, and so far I haven't been "hit" again.
