SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth - yes that's kind of the messed up part but even the those that advocate for the amendment only roughly about a 10th of them stated that they would actually join the military.

SGT David A. 'Cowboy' Groth - they just need to figure it out because they can't have it both ways by becoming a military power that comes with responsibility and obligations.

I say leave it to the Japanese to decide. If it were me making the decision, I would be building up for sure. It's been over 70 years since the Potsdam Declaration and the rewriting if the Japanese constitution that effectively dismantled their military might. It's time for them to get with the times and rebuild, and for us to let them do so unhindered.

SSgt (Join to see) - your right but I'm not entirely confident that Japan wants to really rearm either Japan seems to be very split down the middle on this issue.

You're absolutely correct. They always have been split when it comes to the military. In Okinawa, while they look at us favorably as a big part of the local economy, at the same time they are a peaceful people who don't really approve of military as a whole, Japanese or American.

SSgt (Join to see) - especially because the primary argument always is the environmental impact of a military installation.

Yep, especially when it comes to noise and the ocean. There's frequent complaints around MCAS Futenma due to planes (most likely the occasion F/A-18) taking off from a base smack dab in the middle of a densely populated area, and politicians in Japan have caused many people to fear the V-22 despite its increased safety record over time.

That will be the unintended consequence of China and North Korea bullying it's neighbors

Yes although I highly doubt Japan is mentally prepared to go to war especially because there has been large recruitment problem in Japan not many interested in joining the SDF.
