Not sure about the Navy, but for the Army:
AR 600-20, 4-13
English is the operational language of the Army. Soldiers must maintain sufficient proficiency in English to perform their military duties. Their operational communications must be understood by everyone who has an official need to know their content, and, therefore, must normally be in English. However, commanders may not require Soldiers to use English unless such use is clearly necessary and proper for the performance of military functions. Accordingly, commanders may not require the use of English for personal communications that are unrelated to military functions.

I know this is an old thread, but that CPO would have had my size 12s up his fourth point of contact had he expressed that in MY area. Unless it's work related, you do not have an inherent right to know what two other people are talking about when you're not in the conversation. Maybe he was a whiny little runt who flunked out of language school, and that's why he needs his pacifier now.

Seems you and a lot of others in this 'new' military are hung up on how to skirt professionalism by hanging an 'If it offends me it it must be illegal" sign on your door. The military is a 'profession of arms'...not a job...a profession. Maybe they don't teach that at the Academy's or in boot camps anymore, but as a professional there should be no need for a reminder that it is disrespectful and uncalled for, to speak in any language other than English in the workplace.

CWO2 Shelby DuBois No, one shouldn't leave because they disagree with the policy. They should leave because their view has been identified as prejudiced, and has the potential to lead to discrimination, which impacts the good order and discipline of the Army.
The true lack of understanding is failure to realize that such a view fails to meet the Army values of loyalty, duty, respect, honor, and integrity.
Certainly, everyone has the right to believe what they want. However, prejudice and discrimination are not compatible with military service, because it is in opposition to Army values and runs counter to good order and discipline.

I speak to him in Spanish and I say no flirting in formation in Spanish. That way they know I know what they're talking about and they don't say anything anymore. LOL I had fun doing that as a platoon leader. LOL

LTC (Join to see) - I see what you said about getting your brush up in Spanish from Spain that is a huge difference from Central, South America and Puerto Rico, Spanish the Slang and the way it is spoken is completely different, they will understand it but Castilian Spanish, what is taught in schools is a whole another ball game there. You have to pick up the slang or it will go right over your head. That is a lot of it. Then when you go else where there you can be conversant with anyone. Most working class and below will be using a Different slang, Just like in the Midwest, East Coast, West Coast and the South in the USA people have their own way of speaking the common language.

SPC Kelly Grindstaff - Agreed. Just for example. Mexicans use the Aztec term Chamaco/a for little boy while central Americans from Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador may use the word Cipote/a which is Mayan instead of niño o niña
