Pentagon orders shutdown of Stars and Stripes newspaper

A good illustration how how much this Prez regards both his military as well as independent journalists.

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon has ordered the military's independent newspaper, Stars and Stripes, to cease publication at the end of the month, despite Congressional efforts to continue funding the century-old publication.

The order to halt publication by Sept. 30, and dissolve the organization by the end of January, is the latest salvo in the Pentagon's move earlier this year to cut the $15.5 million in funding for the paper from the department's budget. And it is a reflection of the Trump administration's broader animosity for the media and members of the press. As a former Navy journalist, I find this to be the height of a fascistic move and anathema to an informed military.

Stars and Stripes is an essential part of our nations freedom of the press that serves the very population charged with defending that freedom.

First, the Pentagon is not shutting them down, this has been a subsidy ($15.5M) for some time. They should have been reforming their business model in preparation for this action. As with the USPS, they became used to funding for a dying form of media. There is virtually no where on earth that the latest news can not be accessed by other free forms of the news. Print media has been in decline for decades. The buggy whip is also gone. Use the $15.5M for something more lethal.

Sgt John Steinmeier - Ya know, I never really thought of it that way. :-)

As soon as they legalized the demon weed in CT/NY I will definitely increase my meds.

Peace out, bro.

PO2 Harold Ashton I get that. The issue is not just the National world view; but also how different cultures view us. We have not had a period in our Nation’s history lasting longer than a generation that has gone without our personnel engaging in combat of some kind somewhere around the world.

We have done a great deal of infrastructure building, and I would argue that we have spread peace. The problem is that those are self serving interests and not always wanted or are welcome in the areas we choose to exert the influence.

The lethality we hold in conventional war fighting led us to the proxy wars we found ourselves engaged in over the last 50 years while serving as a deterrent to conventional warfare with other Nations.

It depends on which point of view you choose to examine from as to whether lives have been improved or affairs have been interfered with.

MCPO Roger Collins - You're lucky. I'm in NC and there is a slow down of delivery. They have cut down on overtime, are moving mail boxes, and automated processing machines. For the last few months a friend has been recommending supporters of the PO buy extra stamps supporting postal workers. Mail carriers are putting up posters on their routes asking for support.

Sgt John Steinmeier - Actually, not too long ago when I was doing some research for a chapter on veterans/active duty unpayable medical debt - along with Military Times, Navy Times and Army Times. But, here's the real importance of this rag:
