Not these days...unfortunately the majority of people have the mentality that if you don't agree with me your ignorant, moron, stupid, racist, sexist, homophobic , anti American (insert any other moniker here) and well you just have to be destroyed. There is someone here on RP that I had good debates with but we just couldn't agree...when I said that is probably where we need to leave it and agree to disagree they told me I didn't get a free pass because I disagreed with their "Facts".

Not true Scott I disagree with many on both sides of the fence on a variety of issues. It's just younger people my age and other under prefer to be in a collective like bees. I see it in leftists as I also see it in deep rightists. Most of the time I can see those who claim the true title liberal either be a neo liberal or conservative liberal talk with a conservative and constitutionalist. I can see orginal and blue dog democrats talk with the other side. Now these interactions are rare and happen only from time to time but it still gives me hope. With the screw up in afghan over the weekend I hope this opens more eyes and minds to how the elected on both sides rarely and only show it during midterms or national elections.

PFC (Join to see) - The anonymity of the Internet allows people to say and act towards others in a manner they would not do face to face. Living in South Dakota, most of my neighbors are conservative, many to the extreme edge. However, though we know each's others political leanings, we are at least polite and cordial.
Hell, some of them may be right here on RP, calling me names.

I always remember, in my youth, back in the 50's. I had an Uncle that was as strong a Republican as there could be. My father was a life-long Democrat and Union man (he served as Business agent in northern California for a number of years). Anyhoo, when my Dad and Uncle got together, they would invariably argue politics. It got pretty heated at times. However, not once did I ever hear any name calling, no challenging the other's patriotism (they had both served in combat in WWII), nor any other personal insults. When the politics was over, they would go out on the back porch, pop a beer, and talk about old times back in Oklahoma. Good friends.
I was raised under those circumstances, so it came as a shock, a rude awaking, to get into a political discussion online and have it almost instantly turn nasty.
A sad turn of events. Our nation suffers for it.

MSG Stan Hutchison Thank you, we suffer as a nation but also as individuals for it as well. By collaborating together new ideas can always be achieved. Outside perspective is sometimes better than your own group. My step father was as hardcore conservative as I ever met while my mom as liberal as I know. Despite being married they never discuss politics in public or did they every around me. As now I don't discuss them with people unless I know their open to discussion. It doesn't have to be this way an shouldn't but sadly we have no one to blame but ourselves in the end.
