Are there any traditions associated with the color or style of watch worn by certain branches, specialty, or anything similar?

Don't most just pull out their phone to see what time it is nowadays?

Cynthia Croft - I always wore a watchband made for me by a buddy that was a parachute rigger. It was made from nylon web material. Besides the band that velcroed around my wrist, it had an additional strip that covered my watch face and velcroed down. But then I'm an old guy.

I typically just shy away from having anything on my wrist. Just simply because it gets in the way of what I am doing. But yes I try and conceal anything that has a reflection or gives off light when in the field.

Not necessarily. Had a Timex when I deployed to Just Cause that stopped working. Got back thinking it was the battery needing replacement. Nope, new battery did nothing. Sent it to the folks at Timex. They sent me a new watch and an apology as they concluded that after they checked it out it apparently died of fright. To this day I still wear Timex analog watches.

That is why you get a G-Shock watch. They come in black and are rugged. And the idigo light is perfect for nighttime since its night vision compliant. And get it with a sport band that is velcro and has a clip that can be easily removed when needed.

TSgt Scott Hurley - I agree with G-Shock watches.. but they are not indestructible.

I once destroyed on while securing a pallet on a 10K forklift...and embarrassing $85 mistake..

I have had a 16$ casio for the last year and it's been my favorite by far, even over watches that cost $80-$300.
