I wanted to share something I do. As an “armchair genealogist” ancestry.com researcher with trees that more resemble entangled bushes, I look for ways to sort things out. One thing I started doing which some of you may or may not find useful is identify veterans in my trees. I did screenshots of the various medals for conflicts and when I find an ancestor who is also a veteran I add the screenshot to the gallery and, then, make that photo the profile image for that individual. Just a thought....

Sgt Deborah Cornatzer I enjoyed visiting cemeteries and photographing tombstones of relatives.

Yes! Do you add them to findagrave? Also, there’s a guy in Florida, the “good cemetarian” who cleans and researches old stones. I would love to know his cleaning methods. To me, it’s pleasure, but also “work worth doing”.

yes, findagrave.com If you register as a volunteer you can add grave records and photos. I mostly started doing it for my own research, but it has evolved. I get annoyed when volunteers “cherry pick” cemeteries—photograph and record the biggest and easiest, or only their own. I’ve been working a cemetery nearby, that is largely unrecorded. When it’s warm and sunny, I photograph whole sections and in the cold winter days go back and transcribe. Many of the really big cemeteries are recorded, but graves are not photographed. I have gotten wonderful notes from all over the world from people who discover their ancestors’ graves and can visit them virtually.

Me too, Sgt Deborah Cornatzer. I started with Rev War, then War of 1812, then Civil War, etc. I'm not complete yet, but I'm heading in the same direction. I've even found some pictures along the way. It's a great idea. Thanks for posting.

I haven't approached that question yet, as I don't have sufficient documentation to call them "vets" per se.

I recently stumbled on an old photo of a NJ Guard unit that trained at Sea Girt in 1895 while doing family research. It opened a whole new avenue of exploring. I haven’t found many Spanish American War vets in my tree. This NJ unit trained for SAW, but did not go.

What a neat find, Sgt Deborah Cornatzer. I've helped some find their ancestors in State guards for the Civil War, but none for the SAW. Thanks for the tip.
