I was even cheaper when I was farming 10 miles from nowhere. I went into the fields and picked wildflowers for my wife and daughters every few days. Wildflowers do not stay fresh very long. One day two neighboring farmers stopped me. They wanted me to quit picking wildflowers for the ladies in my life. As it turned out, one of them had given his wife a bouquet of roses from the florist shop. She threw it in his face and screamed about him never caring enough to actually pick wildflowers like I did. Oops. The guys wanted me to quit opening doors for all the ladies too. They felt I was setting a bad example. I just smiled at them.

Lt Col Charlie Brown - I was even more cheap than it would appear at first blush. My side gig the last ten years of farming was watermaster of the irrigation district serving the area farms. I had to inspect, maintain and operate the water distribution system serving our farms. Because I picked them while performing my duties as watermaster, I was actually being paid while picking those wildflowers -- paid in part by the two guys that felt I was setting a bad example for their wives to see.
