Thank you, my friend Sgt (Join to see) for posting the music video of Dan Fogelberg performing Run for the Roses.
Song background: "The "Run For The Roses" is another name for the Kentucky Derby. The winning horse of the race traditionally receives a wreath of roses. This song is about a young colt growing up and running in the race.
Fogelberg debuted this song on May 2, 1980 on the ABC special Friday Night Live from the Kentucky Derby, which took place the night before the event. When asked why he wrote the song, he replied, "I always wanted to come to the derby - I've never been to the Kentucky Derby."
Fogelberg was living in Colorado and raising horses when he wrote this song. He said that he wrote it to express his love of horses.
The song can be extrapolated as a metaphor for growing up and living up to your potential. Fogelberg wrote the song long before he decided that The Innocent Age should be a two-disc concept album. When he sequenced the album, he put this song on Side 2 of the first disc, where it represents coming of age.

Run for the Roses written by Dan Fogelberg
Lyrics
"Born in the valley
And raised in the trees
Of western Kentucky
On wobbly knees
With mama beside you
To help you along
You'll soon be growing up strong
All the long, lazy mornings
In pastures of green
The sun on your withers
The wind in your mane
Could never prepare you
For what lies ahead
The run for the roses so red
And it's run for the roses
As fast as you can
You fate is delivered
Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
In the dance
It's high time you joined
In the dance
From sire to sire
It's born in the blood
The fire of a mare
And the strength of a stud
It's breeding and it's training
And it's something unknown
That drives you
And carries you home
And it's run for the roses
As fast as you can
Your fate is delivered
Your moment's at hand
It's the chance of a lifetime
In a lifetime of chance
And it's high time you joined
In the dance"
