What does everyone think about hail resistant roofing shingles? Gimmick, or do they actually work?

I live in North Texas where we are subject to the biblical type hail storms that strike the fear of God into you. Now since I bought my hail resistant shingles they have worked fairly well and I have never had to replace my roof due to hail damage (knock on wood). However I have neighbors that keep cycling through their home insurance and replacing with the cheapest shingles they can find over and over again the insurance company pays or they flip insurance companies. To me that seems like abuse. Wouldn't it be cheaper for everyone if the government mandated hail resistant shingles in hail prone areas? Just seems to me as an actuarial pool we are paying a lot higher insurance premiums for the folks that go with the lowest bidder and do not upgrade to the hail resistant shingles.

I myself have not heard of Hail resistant roofing shingles.
How ever most people go with the shingles that cost them the least.
In the long run Five to Ten years the shingles need to be replaced.
The one that I had put on my roof as the house was being built are Thirty-Five year shingles and they are soom kind of storm resistant.
Like you I paid more for the shingles up front, But we do not have to PAY OUT THE BOOTY to have them replaced sooner.
By the why I live in summerville S.C. next to Charleston. Every now and then we get the big Hurricanes and have had no problems like some of the people that bulit on my street.
Good luck I hop they work out for you.

Nothing is absolute.. But I recommend top grade Heritage shingles -- Visit https://www.tamko.com/
I live in the Ozarks on a Mtn. The storms can be tough with winds, hail & ice storms. My roof lasted for 22 yrs before some shingles were torn off - the shingles were beaten up a lot over the years. Yes you should get the best shingles I have always carried full replacement insurance - but even then I had to demand the insurance co. cover the the full cost. I have numerous 12x12 pitched roofs, and many roofers would not even bid the job. And those who did were far too high and risky. After getting bids from some contractors, I found out that i could get Lowes to bid the job and they also uses Heritage shingles. When replacing the full roofing they also replace the drip edge for all the roof and my ridge vents, etc.. Lowes outside contract services did an exception job and were able to explain in detail to my insurance company the cost of doing the job. Lowes also will provide a 10% refund on "materials" after the job is done if you are retired or active military. Be sure you only meet with the person in charge of contracting out roofing (not a floor salesperson).
If you are going to do the roofing yourself, still get the higher grade shingles. Hope this helps.
