From all kinds of briefings I've had from multiple Command Sergeants Major, they have stated that if one needed a break and to take a knee, transfer to the IRR for a bit and then come back. But, your case will be a more (probably) complex case. In the IRR, there is no pay nor points earned since all you are is a name and number on a roster because you don't show up for anything. But, I would really recommend you contact your S1 and/or RPAC and see if they have knowledge/guidance on this. And to cover your bases, perhaps make a visit to your Career Counselor and see if they have some info on that.

You can always request, on a DA Form 4651. It is a voluntary transfer, which means that both the gaining (IRR - Technically, HHC HRC) and losing (current unit) command need to approve for it to happen. Either can decide NOT to approve - it is NOT "automatic." IRR is still considered "active reserves" for this purpose so your clock on your current enlistment continues to run. (I wouldn't be surprised to see that change, but I'm just guessing, with no actual knowledge)

Depending on circumstances (what your reason for the request is, time remaining on enlistment, bonuses or other perks for last enlistment, etc.), the command might be more or less likely to allow it.

I would recommend against, unless there is a really strong reason why. Your opportunities to contribute and/or earn points were severely curtailed by the changes they made to the IRR program a bit over a year ago.

If you don't mind my asking, why are you only drilling for points?

SGT (Join to see) - In that case, I've got to say my hat is off to you. I had one Soldier who was in the same boat when I was in command. Pulling drill without pay is commitment!
As CPT Lawrence Cable said, if your goal is good years, I would stay where you are, but I could definitely see wanting to take a break. Best of luck, whatever you decide.

SGT (Join to see) - I do have a question. Most soldiers I knew that drilled with a VA disability chose to take the Drill pay instead of the VA Disability. I understand that you have a one day to one training assembly deduction, but wouldn't the extra 20 percent make it worth the effort to take the Drill Pay for those days?
Admittedly your percentage is higher than anyone that I had in the unit and isn't a large amount of money difference.
After 14 years and three deployments, good luck in what ever you decide.

CPT Lawrence Cable - Sir I was basically told by the VA that with my rating wouldn't be able to collect any drill pay as well. They even told me that if I was paid on accidident to set the money aside to pay it back. Thank you sir!

SGT (Join to see) - I would advise checking that out. I haven't been active reserve or NG for awhile, but you should be able to collect whichever is the higher amount, which was normally the drill pay. Back then, they advised that you put the amount the VA would have paid you for the UTA's in an account and pay it back once a year. I don't know if the difference would make it worth your while to do that or not. I did look through the VA stuff and can't find a restriction on this by disability level.

no IRR is not a way out of doing your job. You don't just get your bonus and weasel your way out to IRR that's some BS, If it was up to me id take your bonus back and kick you out. I don't care what regulation supports it right now.

He said he was drilling for points, so he's not in a bonus position. From a previous thread, I believe he already has 14 years TIS.

Slow your role there staff sergeant. First off I've done my duty as an airborne infantrymen on 3 combat deployments to Iraq. Second I never said anything about a bonus, third you can be hooah hooah all you want but I'm 80% service connected and not being paid for drill, and having to buy my own equipment and travel back in forth for drill when I lose money I could earn at work. If you don't have anything constructive to say then move on SSG High speed. That is all!!!

SFC (Join to see) - It's all good Staff Sergeant it's a tough subject because there are a lot of reservist coming in for bonus money and turning to run as soon as they actually have to do their jobs so I completely get where you are coming from. I am just definitely not in that category. Thanks SSG, take care and good luck with those reservists.
