Please note that all the people in this photo could have avoided this situation if they hadn’t made the conscious choice to break our laws.

Capt Gregory Prickett - War and/or persecution is what separates legitimate asylum seekers from economic migrants who want to live a better life. I understand anyone can make a claim to seek asylum, but under that claim is validated and approved, it's only that person's word that he/she is a legitimate asylum seeker.

If they are legitimate asylum seekers, why wouldn't they seek asylum in the first safe country they enter?

Besides economic reasons, why would someone pick the US over Mexico when Mexico is much closer to their country of origin?

SGT (Join to see) - again, this indicates a lack of knowledge on the asylum laws. For example, under U.S. law, someone who is LGBT can seek asylum if they are persecuted in their own country. So a gay man from Honduras (which is the world's 7th most dangerous nation for LGBT individuals) might very well flee to avoid being murdered. Stopping in Mexico? Not really an option as Mexico City has more homophobic crimes than any other city in the world.

That is not fleeing for economic reasons, and that's only one of a multitude of examples.

Finally, your position does not comport with what the law requires. The law requires that we accept requests for asylum at ports of entry, but there is film of people being turned away, in violation of the law. They may also enter illegally and then request asylum. They have a right to a bail hearing, and they cannot be held indefinitely. They have to be held in humane conditions, and the standards are nowhere close to being met. This "crisis" started when the Trump administration started detaining 100% of the asylum seekers.

Capt Gregory Prickett - I said persecution, but I do appreciate the LGBT example. No doubt a small minority of the migrants might be LGBT, but I worry many migrants will make fraudulent claims for asylum, just as many of the migrants who came to Europe weren't fleeing from the conflict in Syria.

Perhaps one of the biggest problem with allowing people in without proper verification is the sanctuary cities we have. What's to stop someone from making a bogus claim for asylum, entering the country and then disappearing into one of the sanctuary cities before the authorities can catch up to him/her? If we had a working system for deporting people who shouldn't be here, (people who sneaked in illegally, never showed up to their court date for asylum, overstayed their visas, etc.) I would be more in favor with letting people stay here temporarily until their case gets finalized.

SGT (Join to see) - 89% of asylum seekers show up at the hearing. If they are represented by counsel, that rate increases to 97-98%.

Second, ICE can get illegal aliens out of sanctuary cities. All they have to do is get a warrant. You know, like the law requires.

So as I read all the posts on this thread I came to a conclusion or two. 1. Attorneys spin the definition of the words in a law the best way that is convenient for them and their client..if the literal meaning was used there would be less B.S. 2. The vast majority of asylum seekers are economic migrants and not suffering some great persecution. They, the migrants, are also asylum shopping. Asylum claims must be initiated in the first safe country arrived at and last time I checked there is a country between the USA and other central American nations. Bottom line is the tax payers are footing the bill for nothing more than a voting demographic change to keep the left in power. Come here the right way, don't use loop holes and everything will be good. Come the "perceived" wrong way and all the is going to happen is the eventual violent response.

Capt Gregory Prickett - Because the Trump administration is cracking down on the abuse of our asylum system, and how people are taking advantage of it.

SGT (Join to see) - no, because the AG instructed immigration judges to disregard certain types of persecution, such as the presence of criminal gangs, in making asylum determinations, and since the judges work for the Dept of Justice, they have to follow the AG's instructions or they get fired.

It is akin to a football referee requiring that the visiting team gain 10 yards for a first down, but only running yards count, while both passing and running yards count for the home team. When the prosecutor can fire the judge, it is not an unbiased system.

I don't feel that the presence of criminal gangs is a type of persecution and should qualify for asylum anyways. There's crime in every country of the world. We have criminal gangs in most major U.S. cities. Hell, some would say that our Congress is a type of "criminal gang"...lol

SGT (Join to see) - that wasn't the point. The point was that the prosecution controls the court, which is improper, and that they changed the rules to favor their side.

Ironically, the law is only enforced/followed when people believe in the law. This invasion of economic migrants is eventually going to create a bigger problem with citizens that the government may not be able to control. Furthermore international law on asylum is followed here in the U.S. Because we choose to follow it. If we choose not to what is the UN or any other inyernational body going truly going to do? Economic sanctions, have some meetings or pass a resolution condemning the USA; sure go ahead..debsr we contribute the most money and resources to the UN, it would suck if we used that money to help our sovereign nation and not those trying to use loop holes to stay here..

Capt Gregory Prickett in·va·sion
/inˈvāZHən/
noun

an instance of invading a country or region with an armed force.
"in 1546 England had to be defended from invasion"
synonyms: occupation, conquering, capture, seizure, annexation, annexing, takeover, appropriation, expropriation, arrogation; More

an incursion by a large number of people or things into a place or sphere of activity.
"stadium guards are preparing for another invasion of fans"
synonyms: influx, inundation, inrush, rush, flood, torrent, deluge, stream, avalanche
"every year the valley suffers an invasion of cars"

an unwelcome intrusion into another's domain.
"random drug testing of employees is an unwarranted invasion of privacy"
synonyms: violation, infringement, interruption, disturbance, disruption, breach, infraction; More

Those are the Webster’s definition of “invasion.” I am sure the legal definition is something completely different. With that being said the third meaning suits what is going on both with vasa over stays and at all our borders. So yes it is an invasion for all of us common, non legal educated, citizens..
