I am a life member of the VFW, as I am sure many in this forum are. I have seen the VFW Legacy Life Program and just wanted to see if any RP members had insight as to the benefit.

Thank you.

I am a life member, but was to avoid having to keep track of if I paid the yearly dues and then again would be cheaper if I live long too.

After a few years of an annual membership, it's pretty much a debt with high interest. Have you ever heard of people closing their VFW accounts for lack of satisfaction from the organization, Sir?

Depending on age at moving to life membership, life membership is a one time payment versus annual membership which has yearly payments which increase every few years. If a person takes an office, annual payments must be paid prior to the due date. Failure to pay the annual payment requires the person to be removed from office with no ability to hold any elected or appointed position for the reminder of the current year. Legacy Life membership offers little beyond the life membership other than an increased payment to the local post each year which continues after the death of the legacy member. Legacy membership is in essence a donation to VFW programs.

SFC Dr. Joseph Finck, BS, MA, DSS, I'm not a VFW Legacy Life member, but the benefits are listed right here:

Each level, Bronze, Silver and Gold Legacy Life entitles you to an additional 5 % discount at the VFW Store, 5 %, 10 %, 15 %. In addition your post, state and HQ receives a payout of $6, $12, or $18 per year forever. You also can take a tax deduction for the cost of your legacy membership, less the cost our your certificate and legacy pin. You also get a distinctive legacy patch for you VFW cap, which goes above your life member patch. $400 for Bronze, $800 for silver, $1200 for Gold. You can pay it all at once or in steps of $400. You must first be a VFW Life member.

Save the $1200 and pay full price on the very few items I would buy in the store. A patch is a benefit? I will remain a Life Member and forego the minimal tax deduction.

FYI, “free” $5,000 insurance policy is included as well as indefinite $18/yr to your post in your name.

a little late to the game on this one... the biggest advantage to the Legacy Life is that the payouts to Post, State, and National continue even after you have deceased.
