It was said the British force gave up their guns for safe passage, only to be decimated later. There were an estimate of 10000 wives in the retreating column.

Krista Rene - I am no expert on this matter but will try to go by memory. The original British force was 20,000 soldiers with wives, children, and servants. The Brits must of thought invading Afghanistan would be a walk in the park as some officers had personal baggage trains of 50 mules, donkeys, or horses. Some of them lived off the economy and the soldiers lived in a ineffective fortress.

I am glad we are not connected to Europe or Asia.

Actually Alexander the Great and the Mongols had success in Afghanistan. They used their cavalry to maneuver against the Afghans. Both invading forces were ruthless. If a population center or village did not surrender at first, the Mongols would completely wipe them out. Alexander killed 100,000 in one event. Both parties were able to hunt down warring Afghans and impart the fear of god in them.

The British conquest of Afghanistan was like a PCS move. One large British Army unit in the US manuevered in the dense American forest with wifes, wagons of goods, and canons. They ended up cutting trees to manuever, and ended up discarding all the extraneous equipment and goods.
