Near the end of a weeklong national salute to Americans who served in the Vietnam War, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial is dedicated in Washington, D.C. after a march to its site by thousands of veterans of the conflict. The long-awaited memorial was a simple V-shaped black-granite wall inscribed with the names of the 57,939 Americans who died in the conflict, arranged in order of death, not rank, as was common in other memorials.

For those not old enough to remember, the feelings against the form of the memorial lasted for years, not months. As time went on, the male figures near the memorial were added to assuage the opinion of many that it was a dark scare in the land with no personal tribute to the combatants as humans. Later, the three female figures were added. I myself waited several years before I visited, but like me, I've never met anyone who came away from a visit with negative feelings. In fact, the figures become almost irrelevant after you experience seeing the names of those you were with, along with the impact of the sheer number of those names. The mementos and letters left by visitors add an emotional impact all their own.
