Real nice. A golden parachute for a deserter. And the sailor that took a few pictures got a year in jail.

The forfeiture would be of anything from conviction forward. Seeing as he was convicted of desertion, assuming it doesn't get overturned on appeal, I suspect he will end up owing money. If he was a deserter his pay should have stopped as soon as he deserted. As soon as that began his eligibility for promotion should have also stopped which means he should still be a private and should not have been promoted while in Taliban custody resulting in him attaining the rank of sergeant and being paid as one since he was returned to US custody. But that all depends on what the Army decides to do once his appeals are complete. It will probably be another year or two before that is over though as appeals can take just as long as, if not longer than, it took for his case to actually go to trial.

SSgt Dickey, That sounds about right to Me, as a deserter that promotion should never have happened ! He never earned anything by walking off post in a combat zone, seems He got off light anyway for what He did ! The trade for Him never should have been made anyway, Deserter for Terrorist We already had in custody, making a traitor out like a hero ? No wonder We have problems !

This has to be an effing joke! This is why you label one a deserter and not MIA/POW from the beginning.
