I was fortunate to see/meet/greet survivors of that Ia Drang battle at the wall in 2001. The producer of the film was there with Sam Elliott and the film was released the following spring (if memory serves correctly) What really struck me was the POWERFUL EMOTION by the black lady wife when she got the news her hubby had been killed. To me, that wasn't acting....it was as real as it gets.

Pictured are some shots I took of the 1/7 Cav floral arrangement in front of panel 3 E where the names of those who died that day are. The other picture is Sam Elliott with 2 of the guys who served at LZ X-ray and Albany.

IMHO this is one of the best anti-war films ever made and brought back a lot of personal memories for me.

My mom was the senior NCO wife in base housing in 1964, and the cabbies would deliver the telegrams to her, and we'd walk to the quarters of the family in question. Mom would comfort the grieving wife and I would take the kids outside and play with them.

When I was stationed at Ft Bragg in 1979 I volunteered and was selected for Casualty notification duty, which was the most emotionally debilitation job I have ever done. Later I was on funeral detail. It was an honor and a privilege to serve my fellow soldiers as they passed over the rainbow bridge, and into glory.

SSG Diane R. That is an interesting take on the film. It certainly doesn't portray war as a glorious or beautiful thing as some of the older movies did.
I also find your phraseology for your time on funeral duty interesting. I don't often see people put it in those terms.

PO3 Steven Sherrill the The Rainbow Bridge is a Wagnerian reference from Das Rheingold.

SSG Diane R. - I know very well what the Rainbow Bridge is, just don't often find others who reference it, without referencing Marvel comics.
