You kind of bring up an interesting point, LTC (Join to see). The WWII era HMS Vanguard was only alive and kicking for fourteen years. However, many ships' lifespan was much shorter than that.
My father served aboard USS LST-78 (it didn't even have a name). It was laid down 9 February 1943, at Jeffersonville Boat & Machine Co., Jeffersonville, IN, launched 28 April 1943 and commissioned 8 July 1943. However, it was decommissioned 8 March 1946 and struck from the Naval Register 8 May 1946! It wasn't even in service for three years!

SN Greg Wright, I can't even believe that you didn't know about Navsource! Anyway, take a look at the photos on LST-78. Most of them were taken by my father. Also, at the bottom of the page, click on the Crew Photos link. You'll see more photos that my father took, to include photos of the day he became a Trusty Shellback!

Our last BB, served in Vietnam. Just watched a program on the German and Japanese Super Battleships. It seems they overlooked the threat of air power.
