Do cases ever warrant an officer taking immediate action and smoking a soldier or NCO?

I was raised that an Officer should leave corporal punishment to NCOs.
Recently I saw an officer smoking a senior NCO. Later realizing it was somewhat of a joke, although the NCO did do something unprofessional as a joke it was very very minute.
It just made me think back to all the times I have heard "that's NCO business" when it comes to smoking a soldier or a Senior NCO smoking an NCO.
Do cases ever warrant an officer taking immediate action and smoking a soldier or NCO. Or should all cases be directed through that soldier or NCOs supervisor? Is corporal punishment an NCOs job and if so why? If not then why also?

I agree SSG John Erny. A school enviroment is totally diffrent and rank doesn't apply. I've seen officers as well as senior NCO's getting smoked in both Airborne and Air Assault School to include our Division Arty Officer. It was great getting smoked next to a full Bird. But usually thats in a mass smoking.

Very rarely have I seen an Officer 'smoke' an NCO…even when I was enlisted…let alone, a Senior NCO. There were usually other more senior NCOs that would 'correct' the NCO before an officer had to intervene. <div><br></div><div>Now - the "NCO Business" deal. No such thing…as my 1SG told me when I was a young 2LT. While there are things that are traditionally NCO roles…it's all "Leader Business".</div>

This discussion topic seems very similar to what any first sergeant will tell his troops: 'No matter what happens, you be the one to tell me about it. Don't make me hear about it from someone else.' Because that sort of thing is just embarrassing. And the same is true here. The NCO wants to have his house in order, and not make his boss come in to do his job for him. Not that the officer isn't correct to do so. The NCO would just prefer to have his sh*t together.
Besides, if the officer is doing corporal punishment, that kinda blows the enlisted response "Don't call me 'sir!' I WORK for a living" out of the water. ;)

NCO's are not authorized to "punish". We are only authorized to train Soldiers. Only Commanders may impose punishment.

True. NCOs enforce, Officers order and impose according to UCMJ. Only Officers have UCMJ authority

There is no such thing as "smoking" as soldier. There is, however, corrective training for minor deficiencies that wouldn't require administrative actions. And corrective training isn't punishment it's training.

When I was in the Navy many moons ago all I could do in the way of punishment was to assign someone EMI or Extra Military Instruction. Typically this would be a bunch of menial work like field daying the work spaces or polishing brass. It would have been unthinkable for an officer to directly punish an enlisted person in front of others. That would have flowed down through the command structure to that individual's Chief or LPO to deal with the issue.

Correct sir! But in the Marine Corps they always seamed to train me at an especially high volume. I have a headache to this day !!!
