An Iranian Billionaire Sentenced to Death to Shut Him Up

Iran’s judiciary, has sentenced Babak Zanjani and two of his business associates, British-Iranian Mahdi Shams and Iranian Hamid Fallah Heravi, to death. High-ranking government officials and security personnel were also named in connection with the case, including four cabinet ministers under former President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. "The four apparently gave Zanjani permission to engage in commercial dealings that bypassed sanctions.
"With the blessing of the Iranian government, Zanjani and his associates repeatedly bypassed sanctions, selling Iranian oil abroad and pouring the proceeds back into the Iranian economy while doing this they allegedly shortchanged the government of around $2.2 billion."

SPC Andrew Griffin They tried by transferring their personal holdings in Iran to the Oil Ministry but after receiving the titles and monies the Oil Ministry said it wasn't enough. The Judiciary ruling requires an additional sum of money be paid to the Oil Ministry in addition to him being put to death.

Unfortunately he isn't an American because the court case would still be going on when he died of old age and without a dime being recovered (well, OK, maybe $0.10 on the $1.00).
We could wait for the other shoe to drop - or even both of the other shoes (who his government contacts were and who he was selling the oil to). On the other hand, there is always the possibility that the government contacts are being protected in return for the purchasers being protected since the purchasers are almost certainly NOT Iranians.
Unfortunately he isn't an American because the court case would still be going on when he died of old age and without a dime being recovered (well, OK, maybe $0.10 on the $1.00).

COL Ted Mc Don't you find it interesting that he turned over all his holding in Iran to the Oil Ministry and this did not decrease the amount they want to collect from him? In addition he will be paying them and he is still condemned to die? Don't you think it is interesting that this was all sanctioned by the Iranian government in the first place and it was not until the EU put his name on a list as being in violation of the sanctions that they acted?

CPT (Join to see) - Captain; The fact that he "turned over" the REMAINING "proceeds of crime" should be taken into consideration for "mitigation" and if everything that he stole had been turned over then I would agree with you that the "mitigation" might well have required that he simply be sentenced to a term of imprisonment. On the other hand, if what he turned over in "mitigation" was LESS than the amount that he stole then that should be considered in INCREASING the severity of the sentence.
So far, all we can surmise is that his actions were "approved" by SOME members of the Iranian government (the Iranian government doesn't function in quite the same manner as the American government does).
It's always possible that he will "turn state's evidence" against the other people involved and that that will result in a reduction of his sentence. It's also possible that we simply won't hear about it (the Iranian media doesn't function in quite the same manner as the American media does).
It is possible that "officially" the Iranian government didn't have any knowledge of his activities. Of course, now that he has been "outed" and now that Iran is able to sell its oil legally, he became rather disposable.
