The real question is, is he a legitimate target. The answer is yes he is. The kill/assassinate/murder words are just semantics used by people pushing an agenda about who he was and what he represented. He was the head of a designated terrorist organization. He is fair game, period. That is not too hard to understand.

He is not a political target. He is not elected, he is not a head of state or other high official. He is a military man in charge of Quds Force a designated terrorist organization. The writers of this piece are disingenuous at best.

SSG (Join to see) - It's hilarious the reverence the Liberals have for this Iranian. Yet bombing Colonel Khaddify, recognized leader of Libya who actually was military trained was OK and perfectly legal and not an attemptt to kill him. The bombs were intended as flower pots back then I suppose. Later the Obama Administration was complicit in having him overthrown and shot.....that was OK too.

I said from the beginning that he wasn't elected and so it wasn't an assassination. In addition to that he murdered and directed the murder of civilians and that makes him a terrorist

Dr. Martin Luther King wasn't an elected official. He was assassinated.

SrA John Monette - Yes, but No, he was murdered. Same as Malcolm X, and RFK. Thoughts? Press has been fluid with definitions over the years. Arguments abound - such as X's previous affiliation(s) with that movement. Not a recognized Nation always makes a fair answer. Kings and Queens have been above the reach historically, but not all. It happens with Heads of State with repetition. We need cool heads now.

CWO3 (Join to see) - i think assassination occurs when someone high-profile AND influential in policy matters is murdered. i would never include celebrities who are murdered simply for being famous. there has to be a political element

To the Iranian government, it was an assassination. To some "folks" in the US, it was an assassination. To the military, it was a strategic strike of military action on a target of opportunity. To a lot of Iranians that emigrated here to the US, it was an action that was long overdue and needed to happen. For the rest of the world, it will be about perspective.

SSgt Dawson Webb - Can't speak for the Marines but the Army teaches Geneva Conventions in regard to how some weapons should be and should not be employed (throughout the course). Along with a whole list of other items concerning battlefield behavior (treatment of POW's, Combatants vs Non-Combatants, etc). Geneva conventions overview is within the first three weeks of Basic but parts are also contained throughout the full course. Nazis are the authoritarian government everyone seems to be educated in so they are used heavily in analogies. I could mention we would not be having this discussion at all on the Iranian General if he was Arab vs Persian. Also the truth.

SSgt Dawson Webb - OK so we are off in the weeds because you cannot rebut the main argument. Which is the guy had no formal military training and is not really a General but more the head of a terrorist network.

SSgt Dawson Webb - Oh well lets see what the average Iranian thinks:

“He was the head of a terrorist Shia network. He has blood on his hands, including the blood of Americans, Israelis, Iraqis, Syrians, and, of course, Iranians,” Hossein said. “It’s a great loss for the Islamic Republic, especially Ali Khamenei. They are angry, desperate, and confused. As an Iranian, I’m so happy he is dead and that it was done in such a quick, intelligent way by U.S. forces.”

Firuz said that it was the happiest news he has heard all month. “Soleimani displaced and destroyed thousands of innocent people,” he added.

And another:

“To me, he was always a terrorist,” Kaveh said. “They all are — IRGC (Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps) members, I mean. One day he’s the general, and the day before that he was the guy torturing political prisoners. I see him as someone responsible for the death of many Iranians and Arabs from neighboring countries. Good riddance!”

Does not sound like a General to me and further more the Iranian Army is trained and attends Basic Training even though it largely sucks. Iranian Army detests the Revolutionary Guards.
