I am a CPT with 21yrs combined Active Duty and Reserve service. I'm back on Active Duty as an officer and recently had a couple of unpleasant encounters with a CW3 who is new to my section. Due to COVID, formations are not held. This particular Warrant Officer seems to believe that he shouldn't have to report his accountability to the Platoon Sergeant because she is a SSG. After I confronted the Warrant Officer; who by the way thought it was okay to argue with me about it, I gave him the option of being accounted for as FTR or comply and send the SSG his status. The rest of the section sends a "thumps up" or "I'm Alive" text...the Warrant Officer sends a "."

How does one deal with this type of behavior which is quite unbecoming?

Think of counceling as course correction. If you shoot an azimuth and start walking, you will start to veer slightly off course, and you will need to check you compass. The same goes with a career, occasionally a course correction is needed.

Handle the situation with the same fairness and concern you would show a SP4. Several ideas come to mind assuming the CW works for you.
-remind the CW that the SSG is performing a function for you
-place the CW in charge of performing the accountability function and reporting to you regularly
-written counseling with supporting data. Make it obvious you’re building a case
-make sure the accountability process is in writing along with performance standards and a directive to comply

CW4 Dwayne Guidry - RP was created to provide a place for military personnel to seek out advice from those on AD, as well as veterans and retirees. The Cpt is doing exactly that. It is a prudent thing to do -- especially when one does not want to create animus that could detriment their career.

CW4 Dwayne Guidry - Chief - a "professional soldier" can certainly use Rally Point as a source for advice. The Captain isn't accusing a fellow officer except indirectly; and the WO3's conduct, as described, is childish so my question would be, why should a WO be allowed to not follow a superior officer's stated procedures?

CW4 Dwayne Guidry - In regards to "reporting" to an enlisted soldier, I think the CW3 has a wrong attitude about this. There is a difference between "reporting to" a person and "reporting information" to a person. In this case, the CW3 is reporting information to a soldier whose tasks is to verify accountability. That's a very basic task. I think that Lt Col Jim Coe's solution is elegant...the CW3 doesn't like sending a report to a SSG, the CW3, gets to be responsible instead (which probably will resort in the CW3 reporting the unit's rolled-up status to an E4 in the S-1 shop of the next higher headquarters).
As far as the "Handle the situation with the same fairness and concern you would show a SP4", I personally took this to mean treating the soldier (CW3) with fairness. I always treated my officers and enlisted with the same courtesy and respect. Being an officer doesn't buy you any grace that shouldn't be afforded to the newest private. With that said, respect is earned and this CW3 doesn't seem to be racking up any points in that arena. Depending on CPT (Join to see)'s service experience, this may be the first time she's ever been in the chain of command of a warrant. Although I dealt with warrant officers throughout my career, it wasn't until I went from Infantry to Aviation that I had warrant officers in my chain of command. Prior to that, the warrant was the person in charge of making sure my thermal sights were properly maintained or was able to untangle the property book issues for sensitive items.

Sounds like the CW3 is just being petty. Counsel them, and see if it changes behavior. They are either just an a@@, or they are testing the new CPT. Once they see you won't take their crap (by counseling) then they will either shape up or you can proceed further. But, you have to have it on paper.

WO1 (Join to see) I don't care who he reports to. Every damn morning in the Military we account for everybody. If this warrant officer failed to report then that is how it would be reported. I think the real issue here is reporting to a FEMALE Platoon Sgt. With FEMALE being the root of this warrant officers problem.

SGT (Join to see) agreed "You Dont care" .... Regardless, I think we both can agree that this is petty and unprofessional as a Soldier. However, the point I was trying to make is that this WO is taking advantage of the situation because he knows what he can get away with. As mentioned before, I feel really bad for the NCOIC that is stuck in the middle of this.
