Once upon a time, a quick glance at a taillight or a grill was all I needed to name make, model, and year. Not so much now. In fact, not so much for a very long time...

Thank you my friend LTC (Join to see) for posting an uplifting web article focused on Ron and Denise Aubin and the Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme convertible, “Matador Red" they had their first high school date in.

Images:

2. Hubert Brodeur (left), former owner Brodeur Bros. GM dealership in St. Adolphe. And second owner Ron Aubin.

Excerpts
In January 1974, when Aubin was halfway through Grade 12, he got his chance. The price: $1,800.
“That was my first car,” Aubin said. “For a young guy at 18, to be able to purchase something like that… my dad co-signed at the Caisse Populaire.”
It was well worth the loan five months later, when Aubin asked his classmate, Denise, to be his escort for their grad. Their ride: his red ragtop.
“That was our first date,” Aubin said.
Young men can be impulsive, though, and by the following November Aubin wanted something with more muscle.
He traded the Cutlass to a local wheeler-dealer for a Dodge Dart “Hang Ten.”
He wouldn’t see it again for 45 years.
“I always wondered what happened to that car,” Aubin said. “Of all the vehicles I’ve had, that one was the most exciting.”
Paul Friesen - When I called Aubin I was ready for any type of response, from “I don’t care,” to a suspicious, “What is it you really want?”
For him, the call came like a blast from the past.
“Unbelievable,” he said. “It was like a gift. I was stunned. How did you even know?”
I reminded Aubin he’d signed the manual.
“I was so proud of that car,” he said, laughing.
We promised to get together in the summer for a reunion of sorts: Ron, the convertible and his high-school grad date. Denise was now his wife.
On Aug. 5, 2019, we pulled up to their home."

I restored a 1972 Old Supreme in High School with my father. Loved that car! I sold it a few years back to pay for my new habit... motorcycles... I have since tried to buy it back at least a dozen times...
