Any tips/advice on what there is to do in Fairbanks, such as hunting, fishing, sightseeing, etc.?
I am set to graduate from AIT Oct, 22nd (35F) I am married and have been looking at off-post and on-post housing, what are the pros/cons of both? Any help will be appreciated.

On post housing is some of the best in the Army, and Alaskan architecture is ... different. So live on post first until you get to know the area. If you like hunting and fishing you are going to love it. Interior AK is well known for Moose, Black Bear and Caribou hunting. Lots of fishing lakes and rivers all over. It is not a big city, so the city life is rather limited; but if you like the outdoors it is hard to beat Ft Wainwright.

As a new Soldier and a newlywed(congratulations) I would highly recommend on post housing. The on-post housing is pretty good in Alaska. Alaska is a beautiful place!! Keep in mind, when it’s hot outside, it’s really hot (no A/C) and when it’s cold, it’s REALLY cold (-45 or colder).

At your pay grade, I would definitely look at living on post. Your BAH here wouldn't get you very much. (I am a Realtor). Was you dad a DS by any chance?

No, I’m the first in service in my family. From the research I’ve done, the BAH for an E-2 in Alaska is $1600. The housing for lower enlisted on Ft. Wainwright doesn’t seem to compare to the off post housing I’ve found just by simply looking off the internet. My wife has a degree in teaching, which will contribute to our funds. Do you still recommend the lower enlisted housing on post?

I advise people to use their BAH to cover rent/mortgage, fuel, and electricity. Electricity is running about .23/kwh and fuel is just north of $3.00 gallon. Rents that include heat are usually $1800-$2300/mo. Also, factor in your commute time. having to roll through the gate at 0530 to make 0630 formation 5 days a week isn't fun. Anything you find under $1,500/mo is not going to be a nice place. Where are you looking online?
