On orders to Fort Bliss. Going to 1 AD. Looking for insight?

My wife and I are both on orders to 1AD with April FY 20 report. Both MSGs and both Intel. Looking for someone to reach out to get some insight on what we can expect and any other useful information about the units.

I spent over 10 years stationed at Fort Bliss/ El Paso area. Fort Bliss is a modern post with everything you need, from commissary to brand name stores and restaurants. The post is divided into two areas, East Bliss which is where 1AD is and Main Bliss where you will find most of the facilities I mentioned above. However, East Bliss does have three gas stations and shoppettes and nice foodcourt near the main gym/aquatics center, which also has a bank and the USO. El Paso is divided in three main areas West side, North East and East side. If you plan to live off post, I would recommend to look into the North East of town, driving to and from work is much easier. East El Paso has new homes, which is nice, but the traffic can be really bad going to and from post. If you like Mexican food, you will never get tired of trying new places, people are nice and friendly. Finally, if you are out of post in uniform, more often then not people will come to you to thank you for your service. Many times the nice people of El Paso even paid for my meal at restaurants without me even knowing it. Good luck in the Sun City.

SGM,
Thanks for the advice. Wife and I are going to start house shopping in Oct to get some ideas of what we are looking at there. Do you recommend renting or buying? We plan to retire in a couple years and stay in the area for an additional 5 more while working at EPIC or something similar.

Property taxes can be high, but I had to homes in El Paso. If you plan to retire in El Paso, i would recommend to buy a home or have one built for you. Retirees with disabilities depending on the percentage can get property taxes discounts and other benefits. 1SG (Join to see)

Right now it is a buyers market and I would not buy unless you have longer goals than one tour which it sounds like you do. Spend sometime figuring out what you want in a home and you probably can find it or have it built. There are some homes near me than have an ally in the back where your drive ways and I think that is great. Living in Arizona hopefully you have lost any desire to have grass at your house. I really don't think it hurts the value at all if you have all driveway in front. That is what I would do if owning.

If you want don’t want to be bothered but still a short drive to anything I’d look at moving to Mesquite Hills. Its up north close to the TX/NM hoarder but super quite. There is tons of things to do too just got to explore.

Don't know about your duties but there is a lot to do in El Paso and the surrounding states.

Yeah. Tracking that. Looking forward to having more offerings than we have here at Fort Huachuca, for sure. Thanks for responding.

1SG (Join to see) - I find more things here to do than Hawaii and really only Germany comes close to things to do off duty but that is largely because driving to France was so close.
