Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Abell 3827: Cannibal Cluster Gravitational Lens." Can you imagine something so large, so massive, that it has sufficient gravity to 'bend' light? Albert Einstein could. His imagination may have been kindled by observing how a distant light passed through the stem of a wine glass (who knows?), but that phenomenon closely resembles the subject of today's APOD.
Abell 3827 is a cluster of galaxies that lies over 1.3 billion light years away, and appear to be coalescing to a single massive galaxy, designated ESO 146-5. The light coming from these galaxies is bent as it travels through the gravity field between them, and forms an incomplete 'Einstein ring' (if all objects were in our direct line of sight, the ring would be complete). Based on gravitational lensing observations predicted by Einstein, this galaxy is the most massive object found in the universe (so far). How massive? 30 trillion solar masses (30 trillion times the mass of our Sun).

Hubble view of galaxy cluster Abell 3827 hints at dark matter interaction

Wow! A tantalizing APOD, Maj William W. 'Bill' Price!!! Good morning!!! Be back later!
It is late in the day, Bill, and I just remembered that I indicated I would be back later and what I have for your is a short 56 second video of Abell 3827 as imaged by the Hubble Space Telescope... It is really awesome and I highly recommend that this be watched in FULL SCREEN with sound moderate... (There is no narrator on this one.) NOTE: Images from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope that may show dark matter interacting with a force other than gravity. The blue structures are dark matter observed through a technique known as gravitational lensing.
I bring this to your APOD as another Adjunct video for your follower's enjoyment...
I have also done some research Gravitational Lensing as a subject and may show a separate video on it as it is extremely interesting...

Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) for Monday, August 23, 2021 entitled "Abell 3827: Cannibal Cluster Gravitational Lens.
Image: Abell 3827 - Cannibal Cluster Gravitational Lens - Image Credit - ESA-Hubble & NASA, R. Massey
APOD background
"Explanation: Is that one galaxy or three? Toward the right of the featured Hubble image of the massive galaxy cluster Abell 3827 is what appears to be a most unusual galaxy -- curved and with three centers. A detailed analysis, however, finds that these are three images of the same background galaxy -- and that there are at least four more images. Light we see from the single background blue galaxy takes multiple paths through the complex gravity of the cluster, just like a single distant light can take multiple paths through the stem of a wine glass. Studying how clusters like Abell 3827 and their component galaxies deflect distant light gives information about how mass and dark matter are distributed. Abell 3827 is so distant, having a redshift of 0.1, that the light we see from it left about 1.3 billion years ago -- before dinosaurs roamed the Earth. Therefore, the cluster's central galaxies have now surely all coalesced -- in a feast of galactic cannibalism -- into one huge galaxy near the cluster's center."
