Army Raising Service Commitment for Future Aviators to 10 Years

One of these days, the Military is going to figure out that if you make something unpleasant enough... no one will want to do it. Aviation is a difficult career field; not only is it inherently dangerous... it's academically and mentally restricted in the number of potential candidates who can successfully complete the syllabus to reach active squadrons. Add into that the extra years of commitment (it was seven vs. five when I was in), complex career paths, etc... and someone has to really, really, really want those wings to dedicate that much of their life to something they could lose at any moment, for a variety of relatively "minor" infractions. At some point, the need exceeds the wants.

It's needed because most Commercial Airlines and private charter firms will hire into their training programs helo pilots with no fixed wing experience......same issue the USAF faces and why the USAF extended their commitment.
