Hello All,
Looking for some advice on getting back in the Army. I recently got out roughly a 1 and a half ago as a SSG in the infantry. I would like to get back in, however, I have an RE code 3A from signing a dec statement. This was assigned because about 6 months prior to my ETS, I came on orders for recruiting. With my mind set on getting out then, I had to either reenlist to complete my orders for recruiting or sign the dec statement. I signed the statement and ETS'd with honorable discharge on my then current obligation. I understand this code is waiverable and have spoke with recruiters. The problem I have is, I have a disability rating of 80% and would have to be cleared from the docs and have the VA remove my rating. I don't believe I will have a problem being cleared by the docs, however, if my waiver gets sent up and is declined, that monthly income that helps alot is gone forever.
Question is, how likely would my waiver be approved
If it helps, I have completed ALC, squad leader time, hold a current secret security clearance, and work as a government contractor with the Army at NTC. I also do have a letter of recommendation for reentry by my old BDE CSM that just retired as CSM of Army Testing and Evaluation Command.

SSG Zimmerman, with an 80% rating, I would not reenlist. there is no guarantee that you will ever get that rating again. Once the VA gives a rating, even a 0%, they own that disability. I'd stay in veteran status.

Thank for the reply. I understand that I cannot get that back. However, if the chances are high enough I will take the risk. The compensation of my disability rating is nice but I have a good job and fair okay without it.

SSG James Zimmerman I was a 60% rated disability with the VA prior to re-entering the service. The only thing I had to do with the VA once I came back on active duty was send the VA a copy of my enlistment contract, orders, and a letter requesting to suspend my VA until completion of my service. You do not have to stop your VA until after you receive this. So you’re not canceling your rating, you’re suspending the rating.

I agree. I have worked for 7 years to get a 70% rating. I would be thrilled to be at the 80% rating. You would probably never ever get that rating again once it is taken away. I would just work for the military as a civilian and keep the 80%!! Good luck to you !!! P.s. I know a lot of veterans that are still getting a zero % rating and cannot get any rating. It's getting harder and harder to get it. Good luck to you !

why don't you maybe think about working for Boeing its good pay and great insurance I make 38.00 per hour.

I will look into that. I enjoy my current job and make decent at 28.11 and hour. It is not the money or benefits as a reason to get back in the Army, but rather, the job itself. The feeling of purpose, leading and training Soldiers, getting handed a squad or platoon and reforming it into a combat fit force. Thanks for the reply and word of advice. I will look into Boeing.

I wish they would have given me chance to go back in to I served 16.5 years and I miss it today that was 34 years ago and I still deal with it and having PTSD it really hard but good luck.

While I cannot speak to the recruiting portion of this, I can tell you that declination statements are lifted all the time when the army is in need of soldiers. It should be a non-issue as far as the declination statement goes. As for the disability, I cannot speak on that as an expert.

SFC Boyd, thanks for the reply. Although my dec statement went though and I have gotten out already. My 1SG wanted me to stay in and told me he could get it lifted, but I was set on getting out at that time. I don't believe it's possible to get it lifted now. But I will look into it. If so, perhaps a change in my RE code as well.

SSG James Zimmerman there's nothing to lift now that you were out of the army. On your declination statement it says that you must wait 93 days prior to enlisting in the Army again. While you were in the Army you could have had it lifted, but the requirement would have been reenlisting 4 years needs of the army.
