My opinion is that it is done to allow the Soldier a chance to recover from the incident and improve themselves. The Army has always been a place that allowed for young people to mature and grow, and through that process they are going to make mistakes. As long as it was a mistake in judgment, and not a mistake involving moral character.

I don't disagree; however I think the rest of the formation could benefit and learn first hand what the penalties are for any given infraction. Possibly preventing others from doing the same

I don't disagree, and I might have my First Sergeant or CSM conduct a discussion with the NCO's about the outcome, and then allow those junior NCO's to bring their people together to discuss it.... turn it into a training or mentoring opportunity.

And Have you spoken to those Soldiers post ART15 procedures, say the next day? And ASKED them what happened and why?

SGM, the Army Reserve does not utilize ART 15, I have tried. The Commanders will Admin Reduce it needed. NO, I have not asked the next day; because the reduction would not happen if I did not already know what happened and why.

There is a great article about this in the NCO Journal. "From the CSM: Correction should train, not humiliate."

Our goal is not to satisfy the crowd, it's to correct and train.

It is never good to humiliate someone in public. You teach groups in public, you teach an individual in private. To make it simple for you, think of it this way. Groups are public, an individual is one (hence, not public).

If Soldiers know someone is wrong, and don't see them punished they may think they got or are getting away with it.

At least from what I recall, infractions and punishments were pretty well common knowledge around the unit. If someone got an Article 15 or any other "minor" discipline, everybody generally knew about it within a day or two.

Isn't that why units used to have Article 15s posted on a board near the CQ desk or in a hallway?
