Sounds to me like you just need a slot and be boarded, but I have heard the guard is hard to find slots, since there is not much movement between units, like the reserves.

It is hard and considering my MOS (92Y), it's even harder, but the common thing you hear is someone not doing what it takes to advance and we run into situations such as this and as a soldier, you're like ok, what now....

I will echo the response you've gotten thus far. I had friends who went into the Guard, and their experience was similar: All boxes checked, but advancement was painfully slow if at all. It sucks, no doubt, but don't lose faith, keep being the example of what right looks like. Good luck SPC!

SSG (Join to see) - Might I suggest a move to the Reserves? Sure, they have their own levels of BS--everyone does--but as compared to the Guard, probably not as much. Besides its a well known fact Reserves are the sexiest branch of all, and all others are jealous!!!

Okay, maaaaaaaaybe I over-reached a bit on that last part.

As far as I know it all depends on the amount of slots available for your MOS within your designated state. That's in regards to you being NG though, which as already stated, can take forever for soldiers to be promoted into E5 and up.

I would recommend approaching your first line leader, ask him if he could bring in his packet for you to go over. It's not as hard as people make it out to be as there's a checklist of forms needed and such. Get all the appropriate forms through IPERMS and such, and make your packet resemble his. You HAVE to submit this packet to be in contention for promotion.

I would have to comment that the MOS may be the major holdup, just how many E5 92Y slots are there available in your state? Your personnel person should be able to answer that question. I generally never had a problem promoting qualified E4's to E5, but there are over 20 E5 slots in an Engineer unit.

I have seen the promotion list from E-4 to E-5. There are 40 of us on the list and I am currently number 8. We all are literally separated by a few points. I have great NCO's and AGR personnel amongst me, and I'm not trying to deflect anything anywhere just want to know if there is anything else I can do to get myself in a better position. I am not sure how many slots are in the state but I am in an Engineer unit. Thanks for the information CPT Lawrence Cable.
