Of all your promotions, what was your best promotion and why?

I went into DEP on 15 Feb 80, and left Newark for Fort McClellan, AL (by train) on 1 Oct 1980 as a PV1. Getting promoted to PV2 was cool, as was being promoted to Acting Sergeant (Acting Jack) after just two years, and getting promoted to Sergeant at 30 months TIS. 2LT was huge. But, for me getting promoted COL, after being flagged by the DAIG for over 36 months - for BS - was the best!!!

Mine is bittersweet- when I got promoted to Sgt a Colonel (who was like a father to me) came down to the mess hall and promoted me there. He also re-enlisted me the first time. The reason it's bittersweet is because he died in the Pentagon on 9/11.

On 9/11 I was a Disabled Vet college student at Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Tx. I went inside the cafeteria to fuel up on coffee, and everyone was silent and fixated on the TV...I asked what happened and was told "A plane crashed into the WTC". Moments later some people screamed as we watched the second plane hit the other tower. I said "This was no fucking accident!" and went outside for a smoke and an attempt to wrap my head around what I had just witnessed......And then kind of feeling like I was on autopilot or something, I put my smoke out and started walking towards the arch that led to the street.I had ridden my bike to school, so I was wearing a Triumph Motorcycles ball cap backwards, and boots with a spur on the left one that clinked every other step.Once in front of the school, I became aware of the Mast....At slow time, I marched to the Mast , saluted, and proceeded to lower the Colors, slowly, to half mast. I didn't know anybody who died that day; I didn't have to.

MSG Charles Turner
SSG was the best, because I had a Area Commander who did not LIKE Young White Soldiers. He TOLD ME SO IN HIS OFFICE.... his word against mine so. I JUST SOLDIERED THAT MUCH HARDER... In Recruiting command, ONE WAS NOT TOLD TO LIE.. BUT we were HIGHLY ENCOURAGE AND PUT ON "HOURS" IF WE DID NOT MAKE OUR MISSION BLOCK (aka QUOTA). We my INTEGRITY was VERY IMPORTANT TO ME SINCE I WAS 39 MILES from My Home town. That "Rep" and "beating the bushes" had me producing between 150% and 250% Monthly! I was putting enlistments off. Well the "ole Man" LTC and CSM was on my Area Commander in NO TIME. Why was the Recruiter of the Month, Quarter, etc.. not getting sent to the Promotion board??? Well Next month the BOARD and the NEXT SSG!! ;) Sweet!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Being promoted to SFC was my last and most anticipated promotion. After all those years, I was finally treated as an adult by the Army!
