For those Soldiers and NCOs who have ever had the nerve-wracking experience of going to a promotion board, what was the most challenging part? Any tough questions or scenarios that stick out?

I remember my Staff Sergeant Promotion Board.  The question I was asked was "Can POWs receive mail?"  Confidently I said "No."  The 1SG who asked me the question asked me "if I was sure."  At that point I knew I was wrong, but I did not want to change my answer and show any sign of uncertainty.  The CSM asked me to explain my reasoning behind my answer.  I told the CSM that "if POWs can receive mail, that means we have an address for them.  If we have an address for them, they should not be POWs.  We should be going to get them."  With that, the CSM said that he had heard enough and I was dismissed.  I was very much relieved when I my sponsor and I were called back in and I was told I had been recommended for promotion to SSG.  My 1SG told me later that the entire board got a kick out of my response to the CSM.

Well , that answer isn't wrong lol. I have a feeling I'm going to answer a question and it'll sound smart as and I'll be doing all the push up, twice lol

Best response I'd heard, that stopped the board for 5 minutes due to laughter was in response to a question on the E4-E5 board. "What is the responsibility of the Battalion Sergeant Major?" He paused a few seconds then said, "To keep privates off of his lawn." Caught us off guard and was hilarious in the moment.

Y'all definitely have great examples. My SGT promotion board went well but I was thrown off from the beginning. My NCOIC told me "you better knock on that door and let them KNOW how bad you want your stripes!!!" Since I knew my knock would sound pitiful I just used my foot. I accidentally busted the door off the hinges, my BN commander ran out and said "what the hell did you do to my door??" As if I wasn't already nervous enough to begin with...

SSG Woods, a soldier I served with did that. Combat rolled in, low crawled into the room and reported.

Our board wasn't pleased and threw him out.
I thought it showed initiative.
