Descendants, Associate Members and Friends of the 10th Mtn Division,

Again this year, you're invited to join us at Waterville Valley Resort on Wednesday, February 5th, for this year's memorial ski run honoring the New England Chapter's last and most competitive WWII ski trooper, Dick Calvert (86-HQ-2)! Dick was honored in early 2018 by Waterville Valley and the "Silver Streaks" ski team by having one of the new trails on the Green Peak named "Calvert's Crossing". Sadly, Dick never got the chance to ski his run prior to his passing in September 2018. On February 5th, we will celebrate Dick's life by having this year's, "second to last run" down the slope in his honor!

Those able to attend should meet inside the base lodge at 10:00am for coffee and pastries. We'll make our way out at 10:30am with the goal of meeting at the top at 11:00am. Waterville Valley will be offering $10.00 lift tickets for military personnel. Should the lift not be operating that day, or due to some unforeseen issue, other arrangements will be made at 10:30am.

We look forward to seeing everyone who can join us on February 5th!!

Sempre Avanti and Climb to Glory!!

I joined the Army out of high school in 1956 and tried to enlist in the “ski troops”. I was told that we didn’t have them anymore so was enlisted in Army Security and trained as a Russian linguist and sent to Germany where there is awesome skiing. In fact, the Army had Hotels and a ski area in the Alps- Garmisch and Bertchesgarten . I ended up skiing on an Army ski team. I got to be that ski trooper in a way!

Growing up and skiing as a kid in the ‘50’s, the troopers of the 10th Mountain Division were my heroes! I even had a 10th Parka that one of my dad’s friends gave me. A few years ago, I was selling my collection of e-bay including that parka. I even remembered the soldiers name. To my surprise, I got a call from the ski trooper’s daughter to say that her father was alive and still active with the 10th reunioners and could she buy her Dad’s parka back. It was going to a military museum in Paris. I cancelled the auction, pissed off Paris and gave it back. He was thrilled as he had nothing from his WWII gear.
