Sounds to me as if they are on the path to identifying the engine behind plate tectonics. The region about Indonesia is an active subduction zone, but at a relatively shallow depth. The western Pacific is known for its seismic activity and volcanism. An active subduction zone runs the length of the western side of the South American continent (where we find Brazil), but volcanism is not as prevalent. A good subject for geophysicists and planetary scientists to ponder.
