How does the promotion system work in the Reserves? What all does someone have to do to get E-5?
I’m currently Active duty, But I have no idea how promotion works for reserves. One of my battles who is in the reserves just went to BLC and graduated two months ago but hasn’t been pinned yet. What do they have to do in order to get their 5?

To make E5 in the USAR? Find a unit that has an open E5 slot and have a pulse.

You need to complete your required training. Be selected for promotion, and either be promoted into an open slot within your unit or into another unit with your MOS and promotion rank. Points count, but not like they do on Active Duty. The points put you on the Order of Merit List which designates who gets promoted first. If your Battle hasn't been promoted yet, then it's either due to: no available slots, not willing to travel for said promotion, orders hasn't been cut yet, or it's not his turn yet.

In the NG and USAR, it is all available slots. go to schools meet the requirements, but now you have to wait for an open slot to get promoted to.

What SGM said is correct, same applies to the AF side of the house. First you have to meet all the requirements (TIS/TIG, required schools, and retainability) and then there has to be an open slot.
The biggest obstacle for most folks is the open slot. Slots are unit specific and not Army wide.
