I'm transitioning after 32+ years of service to the Army/USAR/ARNG. There are things that I will miss, but many other things I will NOT miss. For instance: Piss test, APFT, height/weight, hurry up and wait, toxic leadership, unethical behavior, paperwork, politics, etc.

What other things can I be glad to be rid of as I hang up the uniform for good? Give examples of what you don't miss, branch of service immaterial.

Being accountable for PVT Schmedlap's unpredictable bad decisions while he is off duty, PT, toxic leaders, blatant double standards, motor stables, S1, Command and Staff, FRGs that tell pregnant wives of deployed Soldiers to drive themselves to the hospital, mandatory fun.... The list is long.

"Mandatory fun" for officers and senior enlisted (required social events). Toxic leadership.

CMSgt Virgil Horsley - None of our "fun" was merely "highly encouraged"--it was always "mandatory" (unless we were on shift), and usually expensive.

CMSgt Virgil Horsley Unfortunately that exists in the civilian world as well.

CMSgt Virgil Horsley For us, almost everything was highly encouraged, not mandatory. However, "highly encouraged" meant that absence would mean a "no" on your NCOER for Army values, as you had not displayed loyalty to your unit. I had that spelled out explicitly on more than one occasion.

Oldest brother's neighbor near Tampa had been a Colonel USAF many years ago. He was tasked with "no-notice" readiness inspections for Strat Air Com. He said they would notify the tower as inbound, and once they arrived they would sound the klaxon and observe. We had CG and IG inspections, but prepared for months, so this sounded pretty challenging to me.
