MOST OF US OLD FOSSILS NEVER WERE ISSUED THE LITTLE BLACK RIFLE TO BEGIN WITH. IN BCT, WE HAD THE OFFSPRING OF THE GREAT M-1 GARAND, NAMELY THE U.S. RIFLE CALIBER 7.62 M-14.

I started with the M16A1 in 1974, ended with M4 in 2014.

I had the M16A1 in 1979, and on until I left the Army for the Air Force, where the very first rifle I was issued was an M16, without a forward assist, etc. Then we got the M16A2, which was much more accurate and effective, especially at the longer ranges. I also had the GUU at one point (the predecessor to the M4), but I didn't really care for it.

Capt Gregory Prickett The Regiment I was in had a AF detachment. Most of our units had M16A1s but some still had M16s. We had authorization to convert them to A1s. We got some M16s from the AF set that needed repair. My PLT SGT said we needed to convert them. As a lowly E4 I finally convinced him to call the AF set first. They said not no but he'll no !

CW5 Jack Cardwell - when we did convert, all we did was put the A2 barrel on the M16, and those went to all non-cop, non-combat types. Basically, if you wore some form of USAF beret, you were issued the M16A2, if not, you got an M16 with the barrel that would handle the new ammo.

Gee, thanks for the reminder. As if I don't look at a mirror every morning or listen to the symphony of pops and grinds that accompanies every movement...

I like 'em both, each for different reasons and applications BUT... my sentiment will always stay with my first love, the M-14.
