You cannot fix stupid. For me, I cannot understand at all how someone can shoot themselves. It is second nature for me to just automatically open the firearm and check it each and every time. Someone hands me one, I check it. I pick one up, even at a store, I check it.

Perhaps we need a dumbass rule. If you pick up a gun and "accidentally" shoot yourself, you become ineligible to own and carry one unless that was due to an actual weapon malfunction beyond the control of the user.
