Good morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "To Fly Free in Space." Pictured here some 300 feet away from the cargo bay of Space Shuttle Challenger, astronaut Bruce McCandless pilots the Manned Maneuvering Unit (MMU) on a free flight in Space. This test of the MMU occurred 36 years ago during STS-41B (February 3-11, 1984). The MMU has been subsequently replaced with the smaller and less bulky Simplified Aid for EVA Rescue (SAFER) system. SAFER is standard equipment now aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
