Good Red Friday morning, Rallypoint. Today's Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Supernova in NGC 2525." We've had some discussion about supernovae explosions in the last few weeks. The brightest star (bottom left) in today's image is Supernova SN 2018gv, first observed in January 2018 by amateur astronomer Koichi Itagaki. By February, it was being recorded by the Hubble telescope to help scientists track the expansion rate of the universe. In a separate comment I'll post a time-lapse video of SN 2018gv composed of Hubble shots taken during 2018.
All this action took place on the outskirts of NGC 2525 in the constellation Puppis (its tucked in to the left of Canis Major). NGC 2525 was first discovered by William Herschel in 1791, and is located at a distance of about 70 million light years from Earth. The galaxy is about 60,000 light years in diameter.

Thank you my friend Maj William W. 'Bill' Price for posting the NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day (APOD) is titled "Supernova in NGC 2525."

The prosaic author of the the APOD Background started with three 'b' words which brought to mind Bach, Beethoven, and Brahms [the 3 B's of classic music]. Therefore I am posting a classically inspired piece first.
Modern technology enables us to view events that happened eons ago including this Supernova in spiral galaxy NGC 252 which is approximately 252 million light years away from earth. In theory this is am image from 252 million years ago.
APOD Background
"Explanation: Big, beautiful, barred 5piral galaxy NGC 2525 lies 70 million light-years from the Milky Way. It shines in Earth's night sky within the boundaries of the southern constellation Puppis. About 60,000 light-years across, its spiral arms lined with dark dust clouds, massive blue stars, and pinkish starforming regions wind through this gorgeous Hubble Space Telescope snapshot. Spotted on the outskirts of NGC 2525 in January 2018, supernova SN 2018gv is the brightest star in the frame at the lower left. In time-lapse, a year long series of Hubble observations followed the stellar explosion, the nuclear detonation of a white dwarf star triggered by accreting material from a companion star, as it slowly faded from view. Identified as a Type Ia supernova, its brightness is considered a cosmic standard candle. Type Ia supernovae are used to measure distances to galaxies and determine the expansion rate of the Universe."
