PO2 David Dunlap - I did learn my manual of arms on the M1 Garand and had used and trained on that however at a Military Academy with and Army ROTC program before entering the service. Used the M1 and M2 carbines in the service for about one year then thereafter the M16 including a tour in Vietnam in 1968-69 . I did in later years have to show some people how to use and clean an M1 Garand as they got some for ceremonies and not everyone had ever seem one let alone use them. I did also learn how to use the Springfield 03 which had proceeded the M1 Garand and our American Legion post actually had a few of those and I taught them the manual of arms as well as how to fire and clean those as well.,

Nostalgia is the reason I bought my M1A. The M-14 was my Basic Training rifle and the 1st one I had in Vietnam. As for my AR, I agree with Pvt. Mark Zehner, above. I wanted it.

PO2 David Dunlap - I did have an M1 Thumb once in My first week ! We were in company formation learning the manual of arms and going from inspection arms to order arms, the idea is to get Your thumb out of the way before the bolt closes and smashes You thumb against the forward receiver., I didn't yell out or anything to draw attention, slid the bolt back far enough to get My thumb out, it was throbbing a lot, it did hurt. I did lose that thumb fingernail but a new one grew back in its place NOT a lesson You ever forget.
