Men and women veterans who experienced sexual assault or repeated, threatening sexual harassment while serving in the military are at heightened risk of suicide, according to a recent U.S. study.
Researchers with the department of Veterans Affairs found that men with a history of what the VA calls military sexual trauma (MST) are 70 percent more likely than fellow vets without such experience to commit suicide, and women veterans with MST are more than twice as likely as other female vets to do so.

This is why we need more VAs, this is why we have to keep an eye on all victims while they're on the road to recovery. Being sexually assaulted can put anyone in a dark place, and it can get scary rather quickly. I honestly wish we could stop this, sir. But, we can only start by being compassionate towards our follow service members and by having VAs that are easy to open up to.

I wish there were better therapist and inpatient hospitals in the VA. I'M a survivor and have had multiple suicide attempts. Thankfully it didn't work. I have been inpatient three times, all it did was take my mind off suicide.

It's beyond appalling. I've been harassed & essentially left the AF without telling anyone. I was "un-productive"... Thank God for my First Sgt. It was years later that I began to even realize that what had happened had caused trauma & it wasn't until I began talking w my VA intake (I've drawn a blank as to her title) that I finally was able to talk about the major incidents & a lesser one. She was horrified. I'd just accepted it, I thought. Not so. It is as clear today as it was in 1974 &, while I've had a good break from the nightmares, I don't know if they're gone forever.
